Viking Yachts was formed in
1964 by brothers Bill and Bob Healey. The Healey's
purchased Viking Builders, a well-regarded New
Jersey manufacturer of wooden sportfishing and
cruising boats.
In 1971 the company built its first all-fiberglass
model, the Viking 33 Convertible, and the following
fall the Viking 40 made its debut, a huge marketing
success (over 400 were sold in the next 10 years)
that established Viking as a leader in the pleasure-boat industry. In 1987 the company moved
into the large motor yacht market with the purchase
of Florida-based Gulfstar Yachts, an innovative
builder whose designs were considered among the most
modern in the industry at the time.
By 1990 Viking was offering a full line of
convertibles and motor yachts however, the economic
recession of that period together with the ill-timed
10 percent luxury tax crippled Vikings production
for a time. Still family owned and operated from
state-of-the-art production facilities in New Gretna
NJ, Viking Yachts are distributed worldwide. Today
Viking is one of the country's premier builders and
their products are widely regarded as among the best
in the business. The company has built more boats
over 40 feet than any other manufacturer.
